ION GNSS+ 2021 takes place Sept. 20-24 at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. Due to the current covid situation, we regret that we are not able to be there in person. But our colleague Ernst Phillip Mrohs will be there virtually and present following lecture:
Qualification of GNSS in Railway Environment
Ernst Phillip Mrohs, Sravan Machiraju, Matthias Aichinger-Rosenberger, NavCert GmbH, Germany
In the European Union the ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) is an essential part of the railway environment. One of its targets was and is to create an interoperable system for the railway environment based on standards and rules, which apply for the operators and suppliers.
In the last years GNSS was acknowledged as important sensor system for the evolution of ERTMS for example in the field of virtual balises. Here the intended usage of GNSS especially in the ERTMS part ETCS (European Train Control System) needs to be highlighted. As there are no standards nor legislative requirement, the generic approach is assessing processes in accredited laboratories in the scope of GNSS. Therefore, this document presents an approach for the qualification of GNSS based reference equipment for assessing GNSS equipment to be later used in trains. Also challenges for GNSS under consideration of sensor fusion are addressed. Main focus is the presentation of the qualification as an example according to the processes in an accredited laboratory.
